The Billion Dollar Day

February is considered the month of love. For Valentine's Day Americans are expected to spend 26-27 billion dollars. You see, there are all kinds of responses to Valentine’s and what the day means. You have those who are hurriedly searching for a significant person before the 14th because they don’t want to be the loser who doesn’t have a chance at love. Then there are those who wish they could find someone to love. You have those who figure they better go big or go home because this is the time to show how much they love someone. Then you have those who are like me and ask the question why are you telling me I have to love someone on this particular day? I will get my wife flowers on any other day! (yes, I do succumb to the pressure and make sure she gets at least a flower and chocolate.) Then you have those who have sworn off love or opening themselves up to another friendship because they have been burnt one too many times.

Sometimes we get in a rut and don’t put in the effort that we should for those that we love or think that we love. We should be the kind of people who don't wait for a special holiday to give something to someone or to show our love. We should be doing it throughout the year and not just one day because the social norm says we are supposed to do it. Sometimes when you are a black sheep it is hard to open yourself up again and again for a relationship, friendship, or possible love. Maybe that relationship isn’t one of love and finding your forever person, but maybe it is with a family member a friend, or a coworker. Sometimes you will have people in your life who you shouldn’t be opening yourself up to like we talked about in last week's post, Breaking Up with the 1%, but don’t let relationships of the past sour you for relationships now and in the future.

We are designed for community and while we can isolate and do it on our own for a while, we will eventually get burned out, tired, and just quit. So this month of love, remember to open yourself up and be willing to do the hard things in trying another friendship and relationship. Yes, you might get hurt, but you have just as much chance of finding a friend, a confidant, someone else who understands the black sheep life. You don’t have to rush into it. Take your time and who knows maybe you will find something special in February! This could be your billion-dollar day because a good friendship is worth more than gold.

We'd love to help you navigate your next steps in your relationships.
