Live your Story

The airport was busy as usual, providing the intriguing and favorite pastime of people-watching. Scanning the crowds that passed, I attempted to get a read on my fellow humankind, curious about their stories.

One specific fellow stood out. He walked with confidence and a smile. His skin was dark and clearly weathered by the elements. Slung over his shoulder, he carried a backpack with a story of its own. What stood out to me most of all about this man was the T-shirt that he wore. In bold letters, it read, "Live your Story". His path was on a trajectory to pass near my location and as he neared, our eyes met, and I called out, "I love your shirt!" Fully expecting a simple nod or "Thanks", I was taken aback when he changed direction and with a friendly smile walked over and said, "Thanks, What's your story?"

Time froze as I processed what was happening. In the hustle and bustle of the airport, it was uncommon to have or make time to stop and chat. As the masses shuffled along the terminal hallways seemingly unaware of this heartfelt interaction, I snapped out of my frozen state and realized this man was waiting for my answer. I'd never felt so seen by a complete stranger and yet, he wasn't a stranger. He was a kindred spirit living the human experience. Even now, I can't remember what I said. I mean, who is really ready for that question? Apparently, he was. I sputtered out my answer and as quickly as I could redirect, I challenged this kind soul with the same question.

He settled into the space as if this was the most important conversation of his day. I felt such value as he proceeded to take his precious time to pour out the tales of his travels and hiking adventures around the world. He shared his passion for living his story out loud and I remain inspired to this day. I wish I could remember it all in detail, I wish I would have gotten his Insta. I wish these interactions were more common in our world. Most of all, I wish I could be so brave.

Let's start today. We don't have to wish it. It's simple but it's not easy. It starts with a smile, a compliment, a question, a curiosity to know someone and let yourself be known. Look for the one. Who needs to be seen? Who needs to share their story? Who needs to hear your story?
