Here in a few months, we are going to be going into 2025 as hard as that is to believe. Every year a lot of us make New Year’s resolutions because we have decided that new year, then new me. Unfortunately, we have not dealt with the problem of why we didn’t hit our goals….that’s right the person that looks in our mirror every morning.
We are the problem and we always make excuses as to why we can't hit our goals. The latest research I saw is that 88% of us break our New Year’s resolutions within the first 2 weeks. So that is why I am going to talk about successfully accomplishing our goals.
Here are a few steps to look at:
1. Make sure the goal is something that you actually want to accomplish. You would think that this would be obvious but most people usually try to set a goal that they aren’t really committed to, it just seems like a good idea and we think "Oh yeah, I wanted to do that".
2. Make sure the goal is actually reasonable and achievable. For instance, if you are making $35,000 a year, making a goal of making $500,000 for the new year, you are more than likely going to be disappointed. You see, unless you are pretty sure that you are landing that big client, or that you are going to make that big sale, it more than likely isn’t going to happen. Now maybe having that as a 2 or 3-year goal is more feasible.
3. This ties into the last step. Don’t make your goals based on only feelings. Feelings are a good thing but they do lie. Make sure that you are also using the logic side of your brain.
4. The most important part of achieving a goal is to visualize and act like you have achieved that goal. Then you work your way backward. These are a few steps that I have found work great and help us have that balance between feeling the goal but also making sure that it is reasonable.
What was the last step I had to take before I achieved that goal?
What is something that was harder than I expected in achieving that goal?
What surprised me when I was achieving that goal?
What is my next step in light of working my way backward to actually achieving that goal?
Try it for yourself. Consider the above steps. What is a goal that you'd like to accomplish? Visualize yourself already there, victorious, and celebrating this goal achieved. Now ask yourself the above questions. Let us know what you observed in the comments.
